Dental Crowns Los Gatos
A Superior Solution for Seriously Compromised Teeth
A dental crown, also sometimes referred to as a cap, is a covering that encases the entire surface of a tooth above the gumline, restoring it to its original shape, size, and color. A crown from our Los Gatos dental team protects and strengthens the tooth, meaning that it can be effective for teeth so damaged or decayed that a filling won’t suffice.
There are many types of crowns, but ones made from porcelain tend to be the most popular. They’re highly durable, aesthetically pleasing, and can last for many years.

What are the Reasons for Needing a Dental Crown?
There are several instances when a dental crown can be used to restore a tooth. A few common ones include:
- The tooth is severely damaged, decayed, or broken
- The tooth is in need of cosmetic enhancement.
- The tooth has a fractured filling.
- A filling or other type of restoration won’t suffice.
- The tooth has recently undergone root canal treatment.
- A single tooth is missing and needs to be replaced.
The Dental Crown Process
Traditionally, placing a dental crown required two appointments. The first included taking impressions of your smile that are used to create a highly customized dental crown. A mold was also typically made, which helped to create a temporary crown for the patient to wear while waiting for an off-site lab to fabricate their permanent one.
This generally took about two weeks, and then the patient would have to come back for a second appointment to have the temporary crown removed and to receive their permanent one. Of course, if any adjustments are needed, this is where they’re made.
However, CEREC® technology has rapidly expedited this entire process, allowing us to take advantage of special digital software that can accurately plan out and conveniently mill dental crowns within a single visit. In any case, once your crown has been placed, you’ll be given instructions on how to care for it, which includes diligent at-home hygiene combined with routine preventive care.
